Hello friends!
Welcome to my blog. I hope to make this a place where you can find answers to questions about the absolutely beautiful South Korea—from studying as an exchange student to fun little hole-in-the-wall eats to social issues—I want to help you learn more about this country that has entirely captured my heart. I have big plans for this blog, including traditional written posts, lots of photos, possibly vlogs, and eventually, a sort of questions forum where you can post questions that I can answer or find the answer to!
As I have been to Korea twice already (well, in a way once but I’ll explain that down the road), I have already gained a fairly strong grasp of life here. Additionally, I have centered a great portion of my academic pursuits around the language, culture, history, and so forth. While planning my time here, both past and present, I frequently had questions of my own pop up such as, what sort of things will I be able to buy there if I don’t pack it (confession time: due to concerns that I wouldn’t find clothes that would fit here, I brought 2 suitcases weighing 70 pounds, costing me $200 more— it was well worth it), and what will I definitely not have luck finding, or things as simple as what is the weather going to be like? Some were far more specific, and pertained to the specific program I was apart of or to academics, and oftentimes I had a great degree of difficulty finding these answers, and even more difficulty finding them all in one place. As such, I want to help you more readily have your questions answered more easily. I want to share my experiences, the difficulties I faced in getting and living here, and also to help get you excited for the day you visit this wonderful country.
Beyond that, I want to help you gain the most comprehensive view of this country and culture as possible. After returning from Korea the first time following a summer language immersion program, I received many questions about life there. Food, social climate, transportation, and even political issues were all broached. Many times, I had answers and could confidently relay my knowledge and feelings. Other times, I could not concretely give an answer as I had not frequently encountered a topic or possibly merely hadn’t given it much thought. Those moments frustrated me as I had prided myself on knowing a great deal about this country I love, yet so many times I came up short in the knowledge department.
So, I’m here to remedy that, for both myself and for you! My first steps will be to post about the collegiate study abroad process for those who are seriously looking at applying, since time could be of the essence. I will also share about some of my prior experiences that I feel that others may learn from, including the government-sponsored language-learning program I took part in before college, my journey to studying abroad, and some fun travel stuff. Eventually though, I will encourage you all to ask questions, about anything at all, that you would like answered. Food, travel, lodging, politics, nothing is off the table.
I’m a bit of a talker, as you can already tell, so I will try my best to stay on topic and be concise, yet thorough. I hope you’ll learn a lot here and I hope that you too will get to experience the joys of South Korea!
